Sammie Lee Benjamin Jr. was born in Orangeburg, SC to the parents of Sammie Sr. and Earline Benjamin. This fallen veteran went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2024, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, Ca.
Sammie was a graduate of Edisto High School in Cordova, South Carolina. He was a great teammate on the football and track and field teams. He was a loyal Clemson Tigers fan “Go Tigers!” and he loved the Dallas Cowboys “We dem boyz!” He also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Phoenix. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1994 and honorably retired with 20 years of service in 2014. He earned the rank of Master at Arms, First Class, and received several medals, ribbons, and awards for his excellent military service to his country. He continued his career working in the private security sector until the day he departed from us. In our eyes, he is the “Tip of the Spear.” Spending time with family and friends was Sammie’s passion. He
enjoyed attending community events with a Mustang Club in San Diego, CA and he also enjoyed the camaraderie of riding sport bikes with his motorcycle club or independently with his friends. The groups he rode with were known as the OG’s of Telegraph Canyon on the back roads of San Diego. Spiritually, he attended a Non- Denominational Church in San Diego.
Sammie married his high school sweetheart Tonya Benjamin (Govan) in 1995 and in 2013 twins Mason and Raven were born; these kiddos are the pride, joy and loves of his life. They resided in San Diego where he made many long lasting and meaningful relationships.
Sammie’s courageous, kind-hearted, and fun-loving personality will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving family: Mason, Raven, and Tonya (CA.), seven siblings Patricia Williams and Loretta
(Anthony) Jamison (both GA.), Melissa (David) Cleckley, Delores Gethers, Inez (Anthony) Snell, John Benjamin, Albertha Benjamin (all SC), 21 nieces and nephews, along with a host of aunts, uncles, relatives and friends who loved him dearly.
