Rose Smith Obituary

We are gathered here today to honor the life journey and lasting deeds of Rose Mary Smith. She transitioned from labor to reward on Saturday, January 20,2024. Rose Mary Smith was born on July 17, 1946 in Orangeburg, SC. She is the daughter of the late Elizabeth Walker and Fado Bradley but was raised by her grandparents Georgia Walker and David Sitman (Joe Baxter) in Denmark, SC. She later returned to her humble beginnings with her aunt Lorrine Jennings.
Rose received her formal education in the public schools in Orangeburg County. She graduated in the class of 1966 from Wilkinson High School. After graduating, Rose relocated to Brooklyn, New York.
At an early age, Rose gave her life to Christ. She was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY; Free Spirit Baptist Church in Orangeburg, SC and most recently a member of Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Missionary Board, the Pastoral Aid, and assisted in various committees when needed. She made sure all her children and grandchildren developed a relationship with God.
Hard work & forward progression was always apart of her journey. She enrolled in New York Community College where she obtained her Associates Degree. Rose spent 27 wonderful years as a pioneer working for the New York telephone company as one of the first female Wiring Operator. She quickly established herself as a relentless and dependable employee for the company.
She always displayed a significant amount of gratitude for all of the opportunities and relationships gained from relocating to New York. She met and married the love of her life J. D. Smith. To this union two daughters was born Darlette and Kimberlie, and she gained two bonus children Paul and Paula.
Serving others was always something she did gracefully. Rose built a wonderful life with J.D. but was led by God to do more. Following his will & with lots of love, Rose decided to become a foster parent. She spent the next 26 years serving over 15 children, adopting four of them.
Rose preceded in death by her husband J.D. Smith; parents Elizabeth Walker and Fado Bradley; grandparents Georgia Walker and David Sitman (Joe Baxter); one son: Anthony Walker; a special aunt Lorrine Jennings; two sisters Joanne Mack and Diane Wannamaker and one brother Edward Brooks.
The love, experiences, & lessons given over the years will be cherished & forever memorable to her seven children: Darlette, Kimberlie, Paula, Markious, Paul, James and Shamel; one surviving aunt: Geraldine Bradley and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, God Children and other relatives that will miss her dearly.

The service will proceed as follows:

The viewing will be held on Thursday, January 24,2023 at Glover's Funeral Home from 2:00pm until 6:00pm.

The funeral will be held on Friday, January 25,2023 at Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church 305 Old Elloree Rd. Orangeburg, SC 29115 beginning at 11:00am. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
