Robert E. Qualls, Jr., affectionately known as “Booty Boy,” passed away peacefully on May 28,2025, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. He was 82 years old.
He was born in Caretta, West Virginia, to the late Robert and Cornelia Qualls, Robert lived a life defined by unwavering devotion to family, dedicated service to his country, and deep pride in his work.
Robert graduated from Excelsior High School in War, West Virginia. He answered the call to duty and served honorably as an infantryman in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His time in the military reflected his deep sense of responsibility— a commitment that remained a guiding force throughout his life.
After his military service, Robert settled in Washington, DC and established a steady and respected career as a welder in the District government. His craftsmanship and work ethic set him apart, whether he was reinforcing city infrastructure or lending his expertise to friends and neighbors in need. Every project he touched bore his dedication and precision.
Upon retirement, he relocated to Orangeburg, South Carolina, before settling in to Columbia, South Carolina, in his later years.
Beyond his work, Robert embraced life’s simple joys. Fishing provided him with tranquility, while gardening allowed him to cultivate beauty with his own hands. Even in retirement, he continued to weld, always eager to create or restore something meaningful. He also found happiness in dancing, listening to music, hunting, and preparing meals—whether frying fish to perfection or grilling barbecue ribs for his family. Each of these passions reflected his love for craftsmanship, connection, and the warmth of shared experiences.
Above all, Robert was a man of quiet strength and boundless kindness. He cared deeply for his loved ones, serving as a steady pillar of support and generosity. His presence brought comfort, and his actions spoke volumes about his unwavering love.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Cornelia Qualls; his brother, Avery Belcher; his daughter, Denise Qualls; his sisters, Mary Hurt, Louevenia Quash, and Alberta Hutcherson; and his beloved Aunt Lucy Bell Posey, affectionately known as “Big Mama.”
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah L. Qualls; son, Robert (Carolyn) Qualls, III of Orangeburg, SC; step-son, Kenyon Farrow of Cleveland, OH; two step-daughters, Alicia Hall of Columbia, SC, and Kyla Farrow of Cleveland, OH; his step-grandson, Michael Hopson of Cleveland, OH; his brother, Frank (Constance) of Orangeburg, SC; and his three sisters, Brenda Watkins of Cleveland, OH; Beverly Haynes of Upper Marlboro, MD; and Rosetta Russell of Chattanooga, TN. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory.
