Bessie Victoria Amaker Moss, more affectionately known as Grandma and Addie, was born October 11, 1926, Orangeburg County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Rev. John Wesley Matthews, Sr. and the late Marie Miller Amaker. She was proceeded in death by her loving daughter Patricia Young at an early age. Bessie Victoria Amaker Moss departed this full life to rejoin her parents and daughter in the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, April 16, 2023, while at the Ridgeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, in Frackville, PA, at the glorious age of 96, after a brief illness.
She received her primary education at Harlem Evening School in 1956 and further completed her education at Central School for Practical Nurses in 1972. She worked for several decades at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan, New York as a licensed-practical nurse and retired in 1991. While in New York she remained a Child of Christ at Mt. Zion AME Church of New York City, New York.
She married and became the widow of Willie Edward Moss of Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1980. To this union three children were born: a son; Horace Earl Miller of Frackville, PA, a daughter Sandra Hickman of Orangeburg, SC; and Patricia Young who preceded her in death.
She retired and came back home to Orangeburg in 1995 where she became a dedicated member of the Forest Chapel AME church family where she served the Lord faithfully. She enjoyed bingo, eating, listening to her gospel music, watching her favorite television shows, attending church, and spending time with her family.
She leaves to mourn: a son, a Horace E. Miller of Frackville, PA; a daughter, Sandra Hickman of Orangeburg, SC; a special grandchild /son that cared for her, Rafi Young of Orangeburg, SC; her brothers, John W. Matthews, Jr. (retired), Roosevelt Matthews both of Bowman, SC, Booker T. Matthews of New York, one sister-in-law Gladys Moss of Orangeburg, SC; nine grandchildren, Anwar Young of Orangeburg, SC, Jamal Young of Atlanta, GA; Brian Miller and Reggie Richardson of Jersey City, NJ; Justin Hickman of Jacksonville, NC; Jeffery and Jonathon Hickman of Orangeburg, SC; her only granddaughter Deneter Sanford of Newark, NJ; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two special cousins whom she loved dearly Willie Dean Bradley and Linda Daniels of Orangeburg, SC.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Glover's Funeral Home from 2:00 PM until 7:00PM.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Forest Chapel United Methodist Church beginning at 11:00 AM.
All of those attending service must wear masks and adhere to all COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.
