Mrs. Marie Coulter Spires was born on April 4, 1930 in St Matthews, SC to the late Willie and Annie Bell Ellis Coulter. A faithful and devoted servant, God called her home for eternal rest on January 8, 2025.
Marie was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County.
At an early age she attended and was baptized at Bethel AME in St Matthews, SC. A true Christian woman at heart, Marie loved the Lord and was diligent in serving in whatever capacity she could even as a young girl.
Marie relocated to New York City and worked at Martin Luther King, Jr High School and worked as a Teacher’s aide. She was also an active member of Williams Institution CMC in Harlem, NY and became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in their troop. While in New York, Marie met and married William J Spires on May 12, 1977.
In August 1980, they along with their daughter Kathy relocated to Orangeburg, SC. They joined Greater Faith Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Marie attended several other churches, but was currently a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle Number 2 in Orangeburg until her health failed.
Marie was preceded in death by eight siblings.
Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter Katherine “Kathy” Spires of the home; her oldest sister Willa Mae Hawkins, Philadelphia, PA; special cousins Phyllis Walker and Brittany Huggins, St Matthews, SC; a special family friend Brenda Ray, Neeses, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 14,2025 at Glover's Funeral Home from 1:00pm until 6:00pm.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 15,2025 at Glover's Funeral Home beginning at 12:00noon. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
