Leroy Byrd, Sr., was born July 27, 1936 to the late Mr. Willie Byrd, Sr. and Mrs. Amanda Goldsmith Byrd of Branchville, SC. He was called home to rest, Tuesday, May 18, 2021 after a brief illness.
He joined Mays Chapel United Methodist Church in Branchville, SC at an early age and recommitted himself when he returned back to Branchville, SC in 1979.
Leroy Byrd, Sr., stated that he did not like picking cotton so at the age of 18 he left Branchville, SC and traveled to New York City where he lived with his brother Mr. Freddie Byrd of Bronx, New York, and while living with his brother he worked several different factory jobs.
On October 4, 1958 he married Ms. Virginia D. Foster and unto that union they had four children, Ms. Dolores A. Byrd of Houston, TX, Ms. Sarah A. Byrd and Mrs. Cecilia A. Byrd-Mack of Orangeburg, SC and Mr. Leroy A. Byrd, Jr., of Columbia, SC.
In 1959 he started working for the Farberware Company in South Bronx, New York; where he worked in the polishing department for the pots and pans and later retired in 1979 after 20 years of service.
He returned to Branchville, South Carolina where he worked at Cox Wood Preserves, Orangeburg, SC for a short time, then Sunbeam Bakery, Orangeburg, SC where he retired at age 62.
Leroy Byrd, Sr. took pride in working with his hands around his home. He built porches, barns, sheds, and fences; he would say I built that all by myself. He raised hogs, ducks, chickens and a goat, along with dogs and cats. He loved just sitting with his brother James Byrd and listening to him talk about the old days and the way it was when he was growing up.
He is proceeded into death by his father, Mr. Willie Byrd, Sr., mother; Mrs. Amanda Goldsmith Byrd; sister, Mrs. Alice Byrd Simpson; brothers, Freddie Byrd, Harry Byrd, Willie Byrd, Jr., Saul Byrd, Sr., James Byrd, Sr., Paul Byrd, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his four children and two grandsons, Mr. Michael A. Byrd of Houston, TX and Mr. Demetrius A. Byrd of Columbia, SC; and two brother; Mr. Jakie Byrd and Mr. Tommie Byrd of Branchville; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Marie Kelly Byrd of Branchville, SC; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Saturday, May 29,2021 at Glover's Funeral Home from 1:00pm-7:00pm.
Then funeral will be held on Sunday, May 30,2021 at Glover's Funeral Home beginning at 2:00pm.
