Hope Lawton-Backmon Obituary

Hope Lovetta Lawton-Backmon, at the age of 42, departed this life on December 8, 2018, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina following an extended illness.  She was born June 19, 1976 in Orangeburg, South Carolina to the late Isaiah Lawton and Gladys Lawton. She graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in 1994 and Orangeburg Technical College with an Associates in Public Service Degree in Early Care and Education in 2001.

Hope attended Bethany Full Gospel Church from birth where she accepted Christ in her life.  She later joined Kingdom Life Ministries. She was a member of the Kingdom Life Ministries Hospitality/Ministry of Helps. She faithfully served over the years as a choir member, childrens’ choir director, camp director, youth leader and other capacities mainly in the area of children.  She loved children and dreamed of becoming an early childhood teacher. She earned certification as a Nursing Assistant through her high school curriculum. Hope worked at the Calhoun Convalescent Center, Orangeburg Nursing Home, Northside Baptist Church Daycare Center, OCAB Headstart and Zeus Industrial Products of Orangeburg throughout her career life.

She was a devoted, loving mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She loved singing and loved hearing “good” Gospel music.  Her love for people was evident by the many lives she touched and the love shown to her by everyone who knew her. Hope loved family gatherings, outings and spending time with family and friends.

Hope was preceded in death by her father, Isaiah Lawton.  

She leaves to cherish precious memories, two biological daughters, Ashanti Lawton and Angel Backmon, whom she loved with all of her heart.  Her grandbaby-to-be, “Pickle” , her beloved mother, Gladys Lawton, a loving “big sister”, Tameka Lawton, a special niece whom she called her “firstborn” and whom she also helped raise, Shatoria “Shameke” Lawton, her “Main Man”, beloved grand-nephew/Godson, Austin Winningham, a beloved aunt/second mother Apostle Earnestine Pearson, a dear and dedicated, special cousin April Pearson-Wright, dear friends Maurice Chancey, Terry Parker, Hermell Jamison and Shelli Fields and a host of many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  She will be missed dearly.
