Herbert Cobbs Jr. was born on March 15, 1938, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to the late Herbert Cobbs Sr. and Goldia Cobbs. He was raised in Orangeburg and educated in the Orangeburg public schools, where the values of faith, family, and hard work were instilled in him at an early age—principles that guided him throughout his life.
In 1956, Herbert relocated to Long Island, New York, seeking new opportunities. He later settled in Westbury, where he began what would become a long and dedicated career at Meadowbrook Hospital. Through hard work, discipline, and perseverance, Herbert advanced to the position of Supervisor of Facilities and Maintenance. He was respected for his strong work ethic, quiet leadership, and commitment to excellence. Herbert believed in doing every task with integrity and took great pride in setting high standards for himself and those around him. After many years of faithful service, he retired in 1991.
While living on Long Island, Herbert met and married Mae Bell Davis. Their union was blessed with three children: two sons, Michael Steven Cobbs and Gregory David Cobbs, and one daughter, Sonya D. Cobbs, who sadly preceded him in death. Herbert and Mae Bell shared many years together until she peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord.
During his years in Westbury, Herbert became a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Westbury, where he faithfully served in the Men’s Choir. Music was one of his greatest passions. Blessed with a powerful voice and a deep love for gospel music, Herbert used his gift to uplift and inspire others. He served as the lead singer of a gospel group known as Dixieland and later founded another group, The Gospel Impressions, continuing to spread messages of faith, hope, and encouragement through song.
On November 16, 1991, Herbert married the love of his life, Josephine Cobbs. In August 1992, they returned to Orangeburg, South Carolina, where they continued building a life rooted in faith, love, and community. After returning home, Herbert and Josephine joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where Herbert faithfully served as a member of the Men’s Choir and the Trustee Board. His dedication to the church and his love for the Lord remained strong throughout his life.
Herbert’s passion for gospel music never faded. He later founded another gospel group, The New Holy Lights, where he once again served as lead singer, sharing his love for gospel music and uplifting many throughout the community.
Beyond his faith and music, Herbert enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He loved playing the guitar, singing gospel songs, and listening to the music that had always been a part of his life. Known for his sharp sense of style, Herbert took pride in dressing well. He also enjoyed cooking and preparing meals for family and friends, keeping his yard beautifully maintained, and making sure his cars were always spotless. He enjoyed watching horse racing and, most of all, cherished the time he spent with family, friends, and loved ones.
On March 1, 2026, Herbert peacefully transitioned to eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, music, and devotion to family.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: His devoted wife, Josephine Cobbs; his son, Gregory David Cobbs; his beloved bonus children through his marriage to Josephine, Lee Moody (Evelyn Moody) and Lisa Johnson (Curtis Johnson); his sisters, Lugenia Sistrunk, Lillie King, and Annie Phillips; his goddaughter, Jeanine Robinson; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Cobbs Sr. and Goldia Cobbs; his children, Michael Steven
Cobbs, Sonya D. Cobbs, and Maxine Moody Jones; his grandson, William Darnell Moody; his daughter-inlaw,
Patricia Cobbs; and his siblings, James Cobbs and Bernice Jones.
Herbert will be remembered for his kind spirit, steadfast faith, and the joy he brought to others through song. His voice lifted hearts, his presence brought comfort, and his love touched countless lives.
Though his voice is now silent here on earth, the songs of faith he shared and the love he gave will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
