Mrs. Hattie Ruth Cann, daughter of the late Alonzo Prince Johnson and Lillie Bell Cato Johnson, was born in Bowman, South Carolina November 7,1940. As a young girl, she attended the historical Rosenwald School for Bowman area students. During her youth, Hattie learned how to cook and used those skills to prepare family meals while her parents and siblings completed farming chores.
As a young lady, Hattie left Bowman and moved to Charleston, SC for better economic and employment opportunities. Since she already had experience cooking, she used those skills to build a career as a professional cook and kitchen manager. She spent her entire career preparing delicious meals in the cafeterias and restaurants of Charleston, Cheraw and Bowman, SC.
While working in Charleston, Hattie met and married the late Charlie Cann. Eventually, they moved to Florence, where they lived until he passed away. After a while, she moved back to Bowman to be closer to her family.
In Bowman, Hattie reconnected with Antioch Baptist Church, where she had previously joined at an early age. She loved the church and served enthusiastically singing on the Senior Choir and rendering service to others as a member of the Senior Usher Board. She also served as a kitchen assistant, continuing to use her cooking experience in service to the Lord. In addition to her many talents, Hattie also served as the church’s sexton, making sure the building was clean and spotless before each service.
Hattie was a lover of life, happiness and family, most of all. For her generation, she was the oldest grandchild and the main member that kept the family glued together. The family will miss her and forever feel the love she left for all of us as she joins her parents, her husband and her youngest brother, Alonzo Delimerie Johnson, in eternal peace and rest.
Hattie leaves to cherish fond memories her sons: Herman Johnson (late Renee) of Orangeburg, SC and Kenneth Johnson (Laverne) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Jonathan Brice Johnson of Houston, TX and Nakayla Julia Johnson of Columbia, SC; brother: James Johnson of Bowman, SC; sisters: Clayrine J. Polite (late Rev. William Polite) of North Charleston, SC, Joyce J. Davis (Rev. Sanka Davis, Sr.) of Bowman, SC and Joannie J. Simmons (late Willie C. Simmons) of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family members.
