Mrs. Gussella Brown the daughter of Dempsy and Georgia (Israel) Barnes was born on June 22, 1933, in Marion, South Carolina. Gussella transitioned to be with the Lord and her loved ones on June 24, 2021. Gussella Barnes was united in marriage to Hayes Brown in 1953 and was a loving wife and dedicated mother.
Gussella was educated in the Marion SC school system and later earned her associate degree from Virginia State University. She was one of the first African-Americans to graduate with her Licensed Practical Nursing degree from Orangeburg Nursing School. She went on to work in various nursing placements. She started at Rush’s Nursing Home, Voorhees College, Claflin University, and Jolly Acres where she worked until retirement.
Mrs. Gussella Brown was a faithful member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church. At New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Mrs. Brown was a member of the Hazel F. Pierce-Victoria Scott Missionary Society, Senior Choir, Busy Bee Club and the Kitchen and Food Committee where she served for different functions and organizations.
Gussella is survived by her loving son Kenneth (Shelly) Brown of Holmen WI, her sister Margaret Mitchell (Bronx, NY) and two brothers, Carl (Killeen, Tx) and Jimmy (Winter Park, FL) Barnes and many nieces and nephews. Gussella was preceded in death by her husband Hayes Brown, her parents, and two sisters Linda Hampton and Joanne Hughes and three brothers, William, Garfield, and Dempsy Barnes, Jr.
The service will proceed as follows:
A graveside service will be held on Friday,July 2,2021 at Belleville Memorial Gardens beginning at 11:00am. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
