George Zimmerman Obituary

Mr. George Richard Zimmerman, affectionally known as “Richard” was born on June 5, 1945, in Bowman, South Carolina, to the late Reverend Paul and Rosa Lee Zimmerman. He was a proud son of Bowman and remained connected to his roots throughout his life. He was a 1964 graduate and Salutatorian of Bethune Memorial High School, where his academic excellence was already evident. Richard died on November 17, 2024, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Orangeburg after a valiant fight with lymphoma.
A dedicated servant of his community and church, he was an active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served as both Deacon and Treasurer.
His legacy of service extended beyond the church as he was Past Worshipful Master of the Bull Swamp Lodge #312 and former Past Grand Secretary of the Most Worshipful Palmetto Grand Lodge, F&AAYM and Events Coordinator for the Most Worshipful National Grand Lodge, F&AAYM.
His commitment to serving others was underscored with his time in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968, where he served as an Army Medic during the Vietnam War. George's professional journey included roles at Sunbeam Bread Company, Smith Corona, and his dedication to hard work and excellence was reflected in everything he did. He served as a Maintenance Apprentice Instructor at Eastman Chemical Company from 1970 to 2001. He completed his career as an Adjunct Professor at Midlands Technical College, Orangeburg Technical College and the Cope Area Career Center.
In his 56 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Barbara Smalls Zimmerman, George created a family filled with love and pride. He leaves behind three children, Reverend Juan “Rick” (Ida) Zimmerman of Kingsport, Tennessee, Dr. Gayle Zimmerman (Jay) McNair of Atlanta, Georgia and Stephanie Zimmerman of Columbia, South Carolina. He was a devoted grandfather to Railyn Tobin, Jaden Zimmerman, Jesseca McNair, Nicholas Jackson, Jeremi and Julian Turner, and Isaac England. He also leaves Great Grandchildren Aria, Prince and Aela Turner.
He is also survived by his siblings Leroy “Jack” (Martha) Zimmerman, Dorothy Zimmerman, Ella Mae (Ronald) Moskowitz, and Mae Ella “Diane” (Emmanuel) Notoma; In-Laws, Donnis Zimmerman, Earvin Smith, Leola Funchess, Eartha (John) McClary, Earl Nicks, Eddie Nicks, Randall (Venetta) Seels, Teddy (Patricia) Seels, and John Seels. Special Niece Cynthia Riley and “adopted” children Tammy Green and Jonathan Gadson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Paul Zimmerman Jr., Robert Zimmerman Sr., and Harry Zimmerman, Sr. and his sisters Bertha Mae Johnson, Helen Zimmerman, and Mary “Pearl” Smith.
George’s life was a testament to faith, family, and service. His unwavering love for his family, dedication to his community, and devotion to his faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

The viewing will be held on Thursday, November 21,2024 at Glover's Funeral Home from 2:30pm until 7:00pm.


The funeral will be held on Friday, November 22,2024 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church 707 Arista Rd. Bowman, SC 29018 beginning at 1:00pm. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
