Fannie Miller Way Obituary

Mrs. Fannie Miller Way, “Aunt Sue”, daughter of the late Deacon Kemmie C. Miller and Fannie Fersner Miller, was born on May 16, 1919 in Orangeburg County. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, December 13, 2019 at Calhoun Convalescent Home in St. Matthews, SC. The Miller Circle is now “complete and unbroken” as she joined her husband, parents, and siblings who were waiting for her arrival in Heaven.
Fannie joined the Andrew Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully until her health declined. She was a Sunday School teacher and the church’s first Christian Education Director. Many children attended Baptist Youth Congresses and camps, Unions and Conventions because of her love, loyalty, devotion, commitment, and generosity to youth and Christian Edu- cation. She served as secretary of the Bull Swamp Live-Workers Ushers Union for many, many years.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Frank Earl Way on December 25, 1949. In the eyes of man, no children were born, but in the eyes of God, every niece and nephew knew Aunt Sue and Uncle Frank as parents! Aunt Sue was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great- great grandmother! After marriage, New York became her home. But she returned to Bowman every fall and lived with her sister, Essie M. Glover, her brother-in-law, Henry, Sr. (Junior), and their children, Henry, Jr. and Mazie Dell during the school year. In the summer of 1967 she made Orangeburg her permanent residence. Her grandniece, Frizell, and grandnephews, Denzel and Jordan, were reared in the home.
Aunt Sue received her early education at Andrew Chapel School, then in the public schools of Orangeburg and Sumter Counties. She was a proud gradu- ate of Morris College in Sumter, SC where she received her Bachelor of Educa- tion Degree. She faithfully attended the Thanksgiving Rally at her beloved Morris College for many years.
Her teaching career began at her beloved Andrew Chapel School, a three-room building full of love, pride, education and determination! In 1955 when schools were consolidated, she began teaching at Bethune Memorial Elementary School in Bowman, SC. She taught 4th grade and later started Bethune Elementary’s first library. She ended her career at Bowman Elementary after 41 years of imparting love, pride, and knowledge to “her children!” She was always proud when her former students greeted and visited her. They always thanked her for being such a caring, Christian teacher and for the important role that she played during their formative years. She was a dedicated member of the former Palmetto Education Association, now The South Carolina Education Associa- tion, and the Orangeburg County Education Association.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her niece: Mrs. Ruby Miller Shuler; grand- niece: Ms. Frizell Miller-Darby; great grandnephews: Denzel Miller and Jordan Darby; two sisters-in-law: Mrs. Gladys Moss and Mrs. Aleane Moss; special cousin: Mrs. Queen Ester Fersner Evans, all of Orangeburg, SC; many devoted, loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, great grandnephews, great-great grandnieces, great-great grandnephews, cousins, other relatives, former students, and friends.
Mrs. Fannie Miller Way, our beloved “Aunt Sue”, leaves a legacy of love, education, family responsibility, and service to God and mankind.
Our blessed memories will sustain us until we meet again.
