Mrs. Eva Mae Mack Zimmerman, daughter of the late David Mack, Sr. and Alice Crum Mack was born August 20, 1940 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. She entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Pruitt Healthcare of Orangeburg following a brief illness.
She was educated in the Orangeburg County School System and was a graduate of Bethune Memorial High School.
Ms. Eva’s work history includes Ambler Industries and being a beloved substitute teacher at Bowman High School and currently Bethune-Bowman High where she was affectionately known as “Grandma” or “Ms. Z.”
She served as a foster parent in the Foster Care System of South Carolina for many years. Ms. Eva was very passionate about loving and caring for all children just as if they were her own. Every child that came into her home was immediately treated like family by receiving a big hug and she would also tell them, “I am so glad you are here” and “I love you.” She always said all everybody needed was to be loved and that we should show love the same way God shows us love.
She was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Bowman, SC where she cheerfully rendered her service to God and her church. She served as Ministry Leader for the Prayer Warriors, member of the Chancel Choir, member of the Women of Zion, member of the Missionary Ministry, member of the Kitchen Ministry, member of the Sunday School Ministry, member of the Pulpit Aid Ministry, and the Orangeburg-Calhoun Baptist Association Missionary Ministry.
Ms. Eva also displayed her civic responsibility beginning on September 7, 1967, as the first black woman to serve on the Petit Grand Jury in Orangeburg County, South Carolina to hear indictments prepared by Solicitor Julian S. Wolve while Circuit Judge George Bell Timmerman Jr. of Batesburg presided in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit.
Ms. Eva met and married the love of her life, Mr. Robert Zimmerman, Sr., in 1957 and to this union five children were born, two of which preceded her in death, Marashal Zimmerman and Robert Zimmerman, Jr. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister: Coy Mack, Robert Mack, David Mack, Jr., Willie Lee Mack, John Wesley Mack, and Wilhelmina Simon.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories, three children, Paul (Nancy) Zimmerman of Columbia, SC; Cynthia Riley of Orangeburg, SC; Andrea (Michael) Foreman of Raytown, MO; daughter-in-law, Theresa Zimmerman of Orangeburg, SC; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great grand; In-laws, Dorothy Zimmerman of Bronx, NY; Leroy and Martha Zimmerman, of Orangeburg, SC; Richard and Barbara Zimmerman of Orangeburg, SC; Ron and Ella Mae Moskowitz of Orangeburg, SC; Emmanual and Mae Ella Notoma of Orangeburg, SC; Donnis Zimmerman of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
