Elder Joe Calvin Gladden was called to Eternal Rest on Sunday, April 24, 2022 after a brief illness. Elder Gladden was the son of the late Booker Tee Gladden,Sr. and Georgia Howell Gladden. He was born November 28, 1948 in Calhoun County.
He received his education in Calhoun County School System. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps and he served in the Vietnam War where he received several medals. He also served in the National Guard.
At an early age he joined St. Stephens AME, his family church. He later joined Christian Antioch House of Prayer, formerly Howell’s Temple where he was an outstanding, faithful member for over 40 years.
He was employed for Calhoun County for 19 ½ years and also worked to see that the ministry moves forward. He worked to see that the ministry moved forward. He was known as a quiet storm, always soft spoken. His message is often heard in one of his favorite songs, as he sings “Be Ready When Home Comes”. Elder Gladden served as a spoken work minister, Adult Class Sunday School Teacher, Chaired the Brotherhood Department and also was one of the Charter Members of Christian Antioch House of Prayer.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Booker Tee Jr., Henry, Bobby, Freeman, Ernest and Nathaniel; sisters, Carrie Bell, Leila Mae, Emma, and Marie
He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories and cherished times-his devoted wife for 9 ½ years (Mary Williams Gladden) a blessed marriage; stepson, Christopher Samuel Williams, a very special mother-in-law, Ms. Mary Nelson Jones of Orangeburg; one sister, Georgia (Clinton) Webb, Sr., of Norristown, PA.; a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; sisters-in-laws; brothers-in-law whom he loved dearly.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Thursday, April 28,2022 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at Glover's Funeral Home.
The funeral will be held on Friday, April 29,2022 at Glover's Funeral Home beginning at 11:00am. All those attending must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulation.
