A Time to Be Born
Eartha Dene Ishmael Boyd, a faithful and devoted servant of God, was born on September 23, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John and Rosa Alma Ishmael. As their cherished only child, she was surrounded by deep love, strong values, and the nurturing guidance of her family. Her childhood was shaped by time spent in both Philadelphia and Orangeburg, South Carolina, where she developed a deep appreciation for family, faith, and community. She held a special affection for her grandparents, Darling and Rosa Jordan of Neeses, SC, and often shared vivid stories of her joyful days on their family farm.
A Time to Live
Eartha received her early education at Great Branch School and within the Orangeburg County public school system. After graduating high school, she continued her studies at South Carolina State College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught Social Studies, English and Mathematics. During her time there, she met the love of her life, Hazel “Jake” Boyd. Their union blossomed into 47 years of devoted marriage,
grounded in love, respect, and shared purpose. Together, they raised five children: Yvonne Vernita Jarvis, Timothy Pete Boyd, Sherry Dene Simmons, Raymond Hazel Boyd, and Ivy Lynne Brown.
Eartha’s professional journey reflected her passion for education and her commitment to uplifting others. She served as an educator and sports coach across multiple Orangeburg County school districts and later continued her calling as an instructor and coach at Allen University, Benedict College, and the University of South Carolina. Beyond the classroom, she was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and business owner—roles she embraced with determination and grace. Over the course of 43 years, she touched countless lives, inspiring students, colleagues, and community members with her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
A Time to Laugh
Eartha approached life with joy, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure. She treasured her family and friends and found delight in traveling across the United States and abroad. For more than two decades, she journeyed often with her dear friend and companion, Rev. Lucius Kennedy, creating memories on cruises and visits with loved ones. She enjoyed dancing, reading, playing Bingo, and watching sports—simple pleasures that brought her happiness and kept her connected to the people she loved.
A Time to Love
Faith was the foundation of Eartha’s life. She and Hazel worshipped at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, which later became North Orangeburg United Methodist Church. Eartha served faithfully in many capacities and loved reading and studying her Bible, finding strength and comfort in God’s word. She instilled in her family the importance of knowing God personally and living a life guided by faith, humility, and love. Her example continues to shine through the lives of those she touched.
A Time to Mourn
Eartha leaves behind her children Yvonne Jarvis (Orangeburg, SC), Sherry Dene Simmons (Orangeburg, SC), Raymond Boyd (Orangeburg, SC), Ivy Lynne Brown (Scottsdale, AZ), and Mary Anyaehie (Middletown, DE).
