Doreen Beckett Obituary
Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Doreen “Mahogany” Beckett, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 62.
Born on April 1, 1964, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, she was the beloved daughter of Dorothy Jamison and Harry Beckett, both of whom preceded her in death.
Mahogany was a woman full of life, honesty, laughter, and love.
She never measured life by what she had in her pockets; she measured it by love. If you were hungry, she fed you. If you were hurting, she listened. If you needed help, she would give you her last without hesitation. She had a way of making people feel warm, welcomed, and heard.
Known for her fashionable style and unforgettable personality, Mahogany never stepped out without being put together from head to toe — even if she was only going to the store. She spoke her mind freely, kept it real with everyone she loved, and could out-talk just about anybody. Her honesty, humor, and storytelling made every interaction with her memorable. She could tell the same story three different ways and make each version just as convincing as the first.
If you spent time with Mahogany, you were guaranteed to laugh, eat well, and forget about the troubles of the outside world for a little while. Every gathering felt like a celebration when she was around. She knew everybody, and everybody knew her.
Even while facing illness, Mahogany’s greatest joy was serving as a foster grandparent at Bowman Elementary School in Bowman, South Carolina. After suffering a fall that fractured her spine, doctors told her to slow down, but she healed and returned right back to the classroom because, as she would say, “her babies were waiting.” She never let a child wait for love.
If you picked her up to go one place, you already knew you were going all over town and most likely going out to eat, and you better not turn down that meal. She always knew what she called “the quickest way,” even if it took longer. Whether she was giving advice, telling stories, making people laugh, or simply showing up when someone needed her, Mahogany made sure people felt loved.
Mahogany was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Jamison and Harry Beckett; her beloved grandparents, Virgil and Elouise Jones; her infant twins, Erica and Eric Presley; her brother, Timothy Beckett; her father-in-law, Jackie Presley of Bamberg, South Carolina; and her brother-in-law, Darnell Presley of Bamberg, South Carolina.
Mahogany shared four children with John Presley Sr.: John Presley Jr. of Bamberg, South Carolina; Unique’ka Presley of Akron, Ohio; and twins Erica and Eric Presley, who both preceded her in death.
She was a proud and loving grandmother to J’Sean Presley, Janea “Niya” Presley, Jaidah Presley, and Simya Rice, who were truly the light of her life.
She leaves to cherish her memory her former mother-in-law, Frances Presley of Bamberg, South Carolina, whom she loved as family; her sister Stephanie Wiggins of Norwalk, Connecticut, mother of Kevin, Azoria, and Ayana Wiggins; her sister Queenina Roberts of Estill, South Carolina; her brother Dwayne Beckett of Norwalk, Connecticut, father of Dwayne, Dwight, Demond, Latroy, Devin, and Derek Beckett; her sister Sally Roberts; her brother Timothy Beckett, father of Jamel and Teliana Beckett; her sister Lenora Jamison of Norwalk, Connecticut; her sister Lovely Jamison-Smith of Naugatuck, Connecticut, mother of Asia and Roman; her cousins, Thornaire Jones and Monique Jones of Orangeburg, SouthCarolina; her brother-in-law, Gains Presley of Bamberg, South Carolina; and her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Blanding of Bamberg, South Carolina.
Along with a host of nieces, nephews, students, and friends whom she loved dearly, Mahogany cherished her aunts and uncles — Johnnie Jones, Bernice Barrett, Pauline Jones Walker, Tommie Jones and his wife Rev. Annie F. Jones. She came from a large and loving family that meant everything to her, and she always had a story to tell about every relative.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, confidence, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Though every person experienced her differently, one thing remains true: she loved deeply and in her own special way. She also shared special bonds with her “sisters from another mother,” Michelle McDonald and Cheryl Lee; and with Rutesia Holliday, Marquita Sanders, and Ray Jamison, whom she loved as her own children.
We will forever miss her laughter, her wisdom, her stories, her perfect outfits, and her hands that were always open to others. She was truly one of a kind.
We love you forever, Mahogany.
