Mr. Donald Thompson, son of the late Asbury Thompson and the late Lizzie Mae Jones -Thompson, was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on September 9, 1954. He entered a heavenly rest on a Wednesday afternoon on July 13, 2022. He is preceded in death by one sister Maria Lockard and three brothers Shellie Miller, Thermall Thompson, and Douglas Thompson.
Donald attended public schools in Orangeburg County and graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. He was employed by Sunbeam Bakery, Sara Lee, and Orangeburg-Calhoun Bamberg Agency collectively, over 40 years. Donald was a member of Williams Chapel AME Church. He enjoyed coaching the youth and adult basketball leagues for Orangeburg County Recreation Department for many years. His teams were successful, winning local tournaments and state championships. His hobbies included playing checkers with his best friend George, fishing, and watching his favorite sport teams.
Donald, also known as D.T., was our handyman and loving father. He leaves a devoted wife of 40 years, Iris Godwin-Thompson of the home, four children Tasha Thompson, LaMonica (Shawn) Thompson-Stewart, both of Orangeburg, S.C.,Tomika (Terrance) Thompson-Miley of Gaston, South Carolina, and Evan LaTroy (LaVerna) Thompson of Orangeburg, South Carolina; one sister Carolyn Simpson of Orangeburg, South Carolina and one brother Charlie Riley of Silver Springs, Maryland; one sister-in-law Martha Spells-Thompson of Orangeburg, South Carolina; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 20,2022 at Glover's Funeral Home from 1:00pm until 7:00pm.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, July 21,2022 at Williams Chapel AME Church beginning at 1:00pm. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
