Deaconess Delores Walker Rhodes, daughter of the late Mr. Clarence Walker, Sr. and Mrs. Lucille Whaley Walker was born on April 19, 1941. She entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was married to the late Isaac Rhodes for 44 years.
As a youth Deaconess Rhodes attended the public schools of Rowesville, SC and later graduated from Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, SC. Delores worked for over 30 years in the industrial arena until she retired at the age of 62. Despite her retirement, she continued to be a life-long learner. She attended bible study classes; computer classes and in 2010 she received certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Deaconess Rhodes learned how to use some of the new technology as it was introduced, such as an IPAD and Smart Phone. She often listened to her bible study lessons and songs on her apparatuses. She loved to listen to CeCe Winans and Tasha Cobbs.
She attended Andrew Chapel Baptist Church and after marriage, she joined St. John AME Church (Greater St. John AME Church) where she was a member for over 60 years. Delores was a dedicated servant of God. She exhibited Godly character with an infectious smile. She did not mind serving others and did it with the Grace of God. She was ordained as Deaconess in 2023 by Bishop Samuel L. Green of the AME Church. She was the Holy Steward of the Steward and Usher Boards, President of the Stewardess Board; Parliamentarian of the WMS; Member of the Mass and Senior Choirs. Leader of Leaders of the Class Leaders as she also served as a Class leader for many years. She served as a Church School teacher for 30 yrs., and New Members instructor for many years. She was on the building fund task force which was instrumental in the building of Greater St. John AME Church. Deaconess Rhodes was also a member of the Lay Organization.
She was preceded in death by three sisters: Bernice Walker; Mary Ella Boyd; Julia Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law: Chevann Lockard Rhodes.
Survivors include: her loving children: Mrs. Jennifer (Jessie) Whack; Mr. Isaac Lorenzo Rhodes; Mrs. Carolyn (Willie) Gamble; all of Orangeburg, SC; seven grandchildren: Markux Gamble; Samantha Gamble; Jerrell Robinson; Dominic Rhodes; Kevin Rhodes; Kaleb Rhodes; and Jessie Whack Jr. Four sisters: Mrs. Connie Lyons; Mrs. Dorothy (William) Green; Mrs. Ada Ware; Mrs. Whilhelmena Hall and a special niece: Mrs. Vernell Chittams. Two brothers: James Walker; and Clarence (Helen) Walker, Jr. Her caregiver and niece, Penny Rhodes and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends as well as church members.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 9,2025 at Glover's Funeral Home from 1:00pm until 6:00pm.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 10,2025 at Greater St. John AME Church 3589 Rowesville Rd. Rowesville, SC 29133 beginning at 11:00am. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
