Debbie Rivers Obituary

Debbie Rivers (Red) was born in Brooklyn New York November 19, 1963, to Vernell Rivers and the late Allen Rivers. Debbie Rivers made her transition to God’s eternal resting place February 2, 2022. Her paternal grandparents are the late Linda Johnson and the late Annie Rivers and Cecil Rivers of Orangeburg. Her maternal grandparents are Vindell Hickson and John Wesley Hickson of New York.


Debbie received her early education at Orangeburg Wilkinson High School and is an early graduate of the class of 1981. She then furthered her education at LaGuardia Community College after moving back to New York. Debbie was a proud member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and she also attended New Life Fellowship Church where she served on the Usher Board.
Over the years majority of Debbie’s career was dedicated to the journalism organization, where she worked over 30 years for The New York Times and The Charlotte Observer. Debbie enjoyed traveling, shopping, cooking and entertaining family and friends. Debbie was uniquely made. She was tough, strong, and she loved hard. Her strength and determination to succeed was unmatched. She had an impeccable work ethic, and anyone who encountered her, loved her. Debbie never met a stranger. She gave so much and helped so many. She will surely be missed.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father Allen Rivers, her brother Allen Rivers Jr., sister Yvette Moore, brother -in-law John H. McCoy, Uncles Alfred Hickson and Harry Mickens.
Debbie is survived by her loving mother Vernell Rivers of Charlotte, sisters Gail Rivers of Charlotte, Linda Fersner (Alphonso) of Orangeburg, Kim McCoy of Charlotte, Darlene Zeigler of Orangeburg, brother Tyrone Moore of Bronx NY, aunts Dorothy Brantley, Grace Mickens, Julie Mae Odom, Florence Hickson, uncles Freddy Hickson, George Hickson Lifetime Best Friends Debra Cooper and Sharon Oliver, Bonus Children, Chamasha Tyler and Dwayne Tyler, Godchildren Doja Cooper, Armani Jacobs, Chante’ Allen.

 

The service will proceed as follows:

There will be no public viewing.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 7,2022 at Belleville Memorial Gardens beginning at 11:00am. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
