Cornell Rumph Obituary

Cornell Rumph, son of the late Timothy, Sr. and Artie Lee Sanders Rumph, was born on December 2 ,1944 in Calhoun County, SC. He was called to eternal rest on January 21, 2022.
As a young man, the taller brothers of the family gave him the nickname "Shorty" due to his shortened stature. Cornell loved to laugh and play jokes on everyone in the family. He joined Old Mount Zion Baptist Church at an early age. He was a master of walking on his hands. Cornell loved to dance. To hear it told, he could cut up a rug and nobody could touch him on the dance floor. He enjoyed playing games of checkers and chess. He was a very intellectual chess player. Good luck trying to beat him! And he was an avid card player and man, he would tear you up in a game of Rummy! One of the things he really enjoyed was roller skating.
Cornell was educated in the South Carolina public school system and graduated from Wilkinson High School where he excelled at track.
After graduating high school, Cornell enrolled in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado and then St. Louis, Missouri before leaving to serve with our forces in Vietnam. During his tour in Vietnam as a Light Weapons Infantryman, Cornell earned multiple medals including Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Air Medal.
After returning from Vietnam, Cornell worked as a supervisor at Smith Corona, a typewriter manufacturing company. After the business closed, Cornell relocated to Philadelphia, PA and started working at the Internal Revenue Service where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Pringle, who had a daughter, Sucatha. He passed on his love of coffee and martial arts movies to their daughter, who remembers going to watch martial arts double features on Saturdays with her dad. After marrying, Cornell and Liz welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Cornell, Jr. It was in Philadelphia that Cornell planted roots and made a home for himself and his family.
Cornell is preceded in death by one son Cornell, Jr.; two sisters Glory Ann Rumph and Marvia Jean Rumph; six brothers Timothy Rumph, Jr., Reverend Eugene Rumph, Hubert Rumph, James Marvin Rumph, Willie Lee Rumph, and Hurtis Rumph.
Cornell is survived by his daughter, Sucatha, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; four brothers Otis Bernard Rumph of Wisconsin, Robert Preston Rumph and Theodore Rumph both of Orangeburg, SC and Trammell Rumph of Spartanburg, SC; One sister Artie Ellis of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of loving family and friends.
