Chester Burroughs Obituary

Chester Burroughs, 80, was called home on Friday, August 23, 2024, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He is survived by his three children, Lashawn Lee(Jerome Johnson) of South Carolina, Kip Lee (Koya) of Delaware, and Channon Burroughs of Winston Salem, NC.
Chester was born to the late Isaac Sr. and Amanda Burroughs in Thomasville, AL, on October 28, 1943. When he was nine, he joined and was baptized at New Hope #1 Baptist Church in Thomasville, AL. During his teen years, Chester attended A.L. Martin High School while proudly working at Thomasville movie theatre. Chester also took side jobs building and working on houses, plumbing, etc. After high school, Chester moved on to work at Greer’s supermarket until he moved to Harlem, New York City, in 1971.
He then worked loyally as a staff member and supervisor at Tasty’s Bakery in Harlem, NY, until 1986. In 1987, he moved on from the bakery to work in security for Teamsters Local 237 until he retired in December of 2014. Mr. Burroughs wore a well-starched suit and polished shoes to work for 27 years.
A man of God, Chester was a Greater Universal Baptist Church member under the leadership of Rev. Fox after marrying the love of his life, Rosemary, from 1984 to 1995. He later made Fort Motte
Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Curley Simmons and Rev. James A. Duckett, his final church home from 1998 to the present. After the passing of his “Sweetie”, Chester moved into the home they built in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
A loving, patient and giving family man, Chester never hesitated to be there for anyone who needed him while he donated to his family churches and charities in Orangeburg, SC. He will be remembered for his laid-back demeanor but jokester and sometimes sneaky but innocent sense of humor. A natural handyman mentored by his uncle Ishman, he loved fixing and building everything out of nothing while listening to blues, gospel, or watching his westerns. Many will definitely miss their own private wristwatch repairer.
He leaves behind his five grandchildren, Jarai Lee, Tamesha West (Lucas), Jahmyah Reeves, Mahkai Lee, and Jordan Lee; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Grayson West; two Fur Grands,
Bizzy and Olivia; two siblings, Vernon Burroughs (Cynthia) and John Burroughs (Lynette); sisters in-love, Ann Shuler (Erasmo Gual), Valeria Shuler, and Dawn Johnson (Lyman T.); and a host of special nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and close friends.
