Catherine Grant Obituary

Catherine Shuler-Grant was born on June 30, 1935, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was the youngest of Harvey and Maggie Shuler’s ten children. Catherine lost both of her parents at a very young age, so she was raised by her older siblings. At 19 years old move to New York City to live with her older sister, Louella. Catherine attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College New York; where she majored in accounting, during this time she found the love of her life, Walter Grant.

Catherine & Walter were married in 1963 and this union resulted in seven children. She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, and a caring woman. Catherine worked various jobs until she found one that allowed her to share her love for helping people at New York State Manhattan Developmental Center, as a therapist aide for people with special needs until she retired in 1992.

Catherine was a woman of faith, and she was a parishioner at Andrew Chapel Baptist Church in Orangeburg South Carolina, Second Southern Baptist Church in Bronx, NY and Southern Baptist Church in Queens, NY. Southern Baptist Church was her permanent church home where she served as a member of the Floral Club, Pastor’s Aide and the Welcome Committees. When she could no longer attend, a Facebook page was set up for her so she could continue her spiritual journey and hear the Gospel.

Catherine loved cooking and loved her family being around her. For her relatives who came to New York from the South, she welcomed them with open arms & an open door. They would stay with her until they got on their feet. “Ma, Grandma, Auntie” was loved by all who encountered her, so much so that everyone considered her to be their grandmother, even the home health aides that took care of her. She was a beautiful soul who was cherished by all and loved spending quality time with her family. She also enjoyed going to Casinos playing bingo and card games and the game Connect four. Catherine enjoyed traveling and traveled extensively across the US and abroad.

She was selfless, compassionate, and honest. For those who knew Catherine, she pulled no punches; She was very intuitive and could tell if your spirit was down. Catherine would encourage you, pray for you and let you know, God will take care of you. If there was anything you need, she will make sure to get it for you. Taking care of people wasn’t just her character, it was her calling.

Catherine loved music and her favorite singers were Sam Cooke and James Brown. When James Brown passed away, she stood on line at the Apollo for hours just to pay her respects. Catherine’s favorite gospel song was “Sending Up My Timber” and that’s what she was doing every day until God called her home to glory. She will be greatly missed.
