Carlton Russell Obituary

Beginning of life: Carlton Andrew “POP” Russell, born on January 18th, 1938, to the late Leroy and Dora Russell in Savannah, Georgia. 

Carlton Russell who was preceded by his wife, the late Jannie Lee Russell, in which they shared 63 years of marriage. The lovely couple met on the campus of South Carolina State University. During his college years, Carlton studied psychology as well as participated in basketball. Aside from enjoying his passion, he found a home in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., in which he wore his royal purple and old gold with pride. 

Once graduating with the love of his life, he began building a career at Conrail as an engineer for 30 years, following his retirement Carlton began his second career as a Hudson County Caseworker , in the span of his work here he changed many of families lives. After completing a full life’s work, Carlton began to fulfill his purpose in helping the inner city youth at Jersey City Recreation as a supervisor for over 25 years. While coaching basketball, POP became a neighborhood staple. Above all everyone knew who to come to whenever they needed a listening ear. POP welcomed everyone with outstretched arms. The embrace of Carlton “POP” Russell was like no other. His unique way of teaching life lessons were simple yet impactful. 

In recent years, Carlton, created a home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Making his final move from Jersey City, New Jersey, was a big step towards enjoying his retirement in its entirety. He continued to enjoy the things he loved the most, such as playing his records, watching a ball game, and watching his grandchildren grow right before his eyes. Though he may have spent his last days unlike himself, his spirit never diminished. Even through his pain he still managed to flash his unforgettable smile and giggle like never before. Although he will be dearly missed by many, without a doubt his voice, presence and style will be truly missed the most.

Surviving Carlton Russell is his children; Cheryl (Rodney) Young of Savannah, GA, Beverly Johnson of Savannah, GA, Angela (Keith) Jones of Fayetteville, NC, Priscilla Russell of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Eddie Warren, Jr., Rodney Young, Jr., Demetrius Russell, Noelle Fleming Callender, Fatia (Jose Torres) Russell, Domonique Jones, Roderick Russell Young, Al'Jena Blunt, Camille Jones; great-grandchildren, Tylesia Brown, Adian Warren, Kanye Harley, Kimora Maple Russell, Dallas Young, Riley Callender Russell, Jannie Lee Torres, Eaden Russell Atkins, Kimyiah Russell Green.

The service will proceed as follows:

The viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 12,2020 at Glover's Funeral Home at 2:00pm until 7:00pm.

The service will be held on Thursday, August 13,2020 at Glover's Funeral Home at 1:00pm. Services will be streamed live on our Facebook page Glover's Funeral Home of Orangeburg. All those attending must adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
