Bruce Ward Lucas Obituary

Mr. Bruce “Pops” Ward Lucas, son of the late William Sr. and Claudine Lucas Blackwell, was born September 9, 1935, in Trenton, New Jersey. He departed this life on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Bruce resided in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey the majority of his life. He was educated in the Hamilton Township Public School System. As a young adult, he joined the United States Navy and traveled extensively throughout the world. However, his most memorable place of employment was at the Children’s Home, a private residential treatment center in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

Later in life, he relocated to Barnwell, South Carolina where he was employed at the Milliken Industry and eventually retired from the Horsehead Corporation as Chief of Security. Because of his role, he was affectionately known to many as “Sergeant Lucas.” Always busy and desiring to serve others, Bruce became a volunteer with South Carolina Responders. He traveled to many states helping others during disasters. Upon his retirement, he moved to Orangeburg with his loving and devoted family.

Bruce was a member of the Barnwell Baptist Church where he enthusiastically served as an early worship service greeter. He also found immense joy in volunteering with security at different events, attending his Sunday school class and early morning worship services before his health began to decline.

A loving and caring person to those he came in contact with, Bruce enjoyed cooking, being comical, watching westerns, eating chocolate, traveling, and attending his church. He was an active participant of the Oaks PACE Program, a program he loved tremendously. PACE provided him an opportunity to converse and happily interact with others.

In addition to his parents, Bruce was predeceased by his siblings Geraldine Lucas McRae, Margie Blackwell Kinslow, Marion Blackwell Brooks, and Leonard Blackwell.

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memories, his loving and devoted family: his son, Reverend Barry A. Fogle; daughter-in-law, Mary; and his grandsons, Antonio and Barry Anthony; great-granddaughter:Blake; two loving and devoted sisters: Emma Murphy and Gail Blackwell; two loving and devoted brothers: Larry Blackwell and William Blackwell, all of Hamilton, New Jersey; a goddaughter, Karen Guilford Harris; a special and dear brother-in-law, Donald Kinslow of Palm Coast, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who adored him.
