After a long and prosperous life, the call to eternal peace and rest came to Andrew Spells, Jr, affectionately known as “Sonny” on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at the age of 94. At his side was his wife of 69 years, Lillian Cleckley Spells and sons, Wayne and Angelo.
“Sonny” was born October 25, 1928, to the late Andrew Spells Sr. and Thelma Johnson Spells in Cope, South Carolina.
“Sonny” was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County. “Sonny” was employed at the Orangeburg Pecan Company and Palmetto Bakery. In 1953, he moved to Brooklyn, New York and worked as a Butcher for most of his career.
“Sonny” met and fell in love with the love of his life Lillian Cleckley Spells. They were united in holy matrimony on December 29, 1953. Their union was blessed with two sons – Wayne and Angelo.
At an early age “Sonny” joined Canaan United Methodist Church. He became a member of Bridge Street African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Brooklyn, NY during the early 1960’s. His wife and sons became members of the Church as well.
“Sonny” is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Blondell Spells Ryant and three brothers, Oscar, Jake and Hubert Spells.
To continue his legacy and to celebrate his life, “Sonny” leaves his wife Lillian Cleckley Spells of the home; two sons, Wayne (Nellie) Spells of New Jersey and Angelo (Ernestine) Spells of Brooklyn, NY; two grandchildren, Quincy (Arika) Spells and Corine Spells of Brooklyn, NY; one sister Lillian Spells Frazier of Orangeburg, SC; one brother and sister in-law, Gilbert and Thea Cleckley of Orangeburg, SC; sisters-in-law, Lucinda Spells of Orangeburg, SC, Betty Spells of Elmont, NY. Li and Leia Cleckley of Easton, PA; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Friday, January 27,2023 at Glover's Funeral Home from 2:00pm until 7:00pm.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 28,2023 at Canaan United Methodist Church 5659 Slab Landing Rd. Cope, SC 29038 beginning at 2:30pm. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
