Mr. Alexander “Baldy” Gelzer, the son of the late James Gelzer, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Perry Gelzer was born in Harleyville, SC on November 27, 1962. He was reared by Ms. Carrie Smalls and Ms. Mattie Mae Perry. He graduated from Harleyville- Ridgeville School in 1981 in Dorchester County. At a young age he joined Elem Missionary Baptist Church in Harleyville, SC. After marriage, he joined North Orangeburg United Methodist Church where he sung in the choir. He enjoyed praising God in songs with the Spiritual Voices of Power (SVOP) Choir and the Male Chorus before his health began to decline. Alex was employed by White Craft for over 20 years until the plant closed.
Alex enjoyed doing the lawn and gardening in his spare time. He also enjoyed going to South Carolina State University Football games and he was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, James Gelzer, Sr. and Elizabeth Perry Gelzer, his brothers, John Henry Perry, Sammie Perry and Leroy Gelzer and a special aunt, Mattie Mae Perry.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories:
A devoted and loving wife of 25 years, Yvonne Davis Gelzer of the home, three sisters, Elouise Perry, Eva Mae Gelzer and Lisa Gelzer all of Harleyville, SC; two brothers, James Gelzer, Jr. of Harleyville, SC, and Steven (Cathy) Gelzer of Bowman, SC, sister-in-laws, Sarah Gelzer of Bowman , SC, Tressa Davis of Columbia, SC, Ingrid (Charles) Williams of Decatur, GA, and Sandra (Charles) Franklin of Orangeburg, SC; Aunt, Eulie Mae Perry, Gaston, SC; Lue Ellen Smalls, Harleyville, SC, Uncles, Albert Perry, Bobby Perry, Isaiah Perry; Matthew (Charlotte) Smalls, Johnny (Vernell) Smalls, Thomas Smalls. Alex assisted with the rearing of Stanford and Shavonne Smalls. He also leaves a host of caring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service will proceed as follows:
The viewing will be held on Thursday, November 30,2023 at Glover's Funeral Home from 1:00pm until 6:00pm.
The funeral will be held on Friday, December 1,2023 at North Orangeburg United Methodist Church 106 Kinard St. Orangeburg, SC beginning at 11:00am. All those attending service must wear a mask and adhere to all COVID-19 rules and regulations.
