Sallie Gallishaw Kennedy, daughter of Jessie and Rosa Jones Gallishaw was born November 6, 1926 in Orangeburg County, Bowman, South Carolina. She departed this life on February 16, 2019.
Sallie began her formal education in the public schools of Orangeburg County attending East Middle in Bowman, SC and Wilkerson High School in Orangeburg, SC. After graduation from high school Sallie enrolled at Claflin College where she received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.
Sallie began her career as a teacher at Pineville Grade School in Bowman, SC. This began a career that spanned many years and led to teaching positions at Roberts Elementary School Providence, Elementary school in Holly Hill, SC and Richard Carroll High School, where she was also a basketball coach. In 1984 she retired after many dedicated years of service.
Sallie's love for her community did not go unnoticed. She was presented with the Senate Resolution Award to honor and recognize her for her outstanding contribution to her faith, family and community.
Stead fast in her faith Sallie was a dedicated member of Pineville UMC and served as a stone of her communtiy. She served as the Assistant Secretary of the United Methodist Women, the President of the Senior Choir, member of the Gospel Choir and she served as the Secretary of the Trustee Board, Communion Steward, class leader and was dedicated to the kitchen committee. Sallie was an avid volunteer, she selflessly gave her time and energy to the Emergency Food Assistance Program and to the summer free lunch program for the children of Orangeburg County Bowman Community.
Sallie joined Willing Workers Chapter Number 28 in 1952. She has been a member for 67 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Star Nights, Ruth, Ada and Electra, Lady Knights, Spencer Court Number 78, Venus Court /number 51, the CBAA and the NAACP.
When she wasn't busy serving her community, she enjoyed planting flowers, cooking, talking and visiting friends and family.
She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Matthew Nathaniel Kennedy and grandson Broderick Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her four children, Matthew (Becky), Angela, Paul (Marilyn) and Layta; One sister, Asilee Walker of Columbia, SC; Seven grandchildren, Shanna, Katina, Lamont, DePaul, Brittany, Simone, Symara; Three great-grandchildren, Yuri, Alexander and Jamari; A special nephew, Jerell Gallishaw of Syracuse, NY; A host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Services will be held as follows:
The viewing will take place at Glover's Funeral Home on February 22, 2019 at 1:00pm until 8:00pm.
The funeral service will be held at Bethune-Bowman High School located at 4857 Charleston Hwy in Rowesville, SC 29133 on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 11:00am.
