Mavis Sims Jennings Obituary

On Monday, March 4, 2019 God looked around his garden and he found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw Mavis’ precious face.  He put his arms around her and lifted her to rest God’s Garden must be beautiful he always take the best.  Mavis Ynether Sims-Jennings was born April 7, 1927 in Branchville,(Sixty-Six)  S.C. to the late Thomas Sims and Ola Harper Sims.  She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death, Emma, Anna, Thomas, Samuel, David, Willie, and Perlie. 

Mavis was educated in Orangeburg County where she was an honor student.  At an early age she received Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Mays Chapel United Methodist Church.  She later joined St. James Methodist church which later merged with Salley Chapel United Methodist Church, which is now Edisto Fork United Methodist Church where she was a faithful member. She served in various capacities: Chairperson of Worship, President of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, a member of the United Methodist Women, President of the Senior Choir a member of the Gospel Choir, and President of the United Methodist Women.

Mavis was joined in holy matrimony to the late Joseph Jennings and from this union five children were born.  Three of whom preceded her in death, Nathaniel, Joseph Alton, and Mary Alice. 

Mavis was employed by Dixie Land Dinette, Smoak’s Cleaners, and later retired from Ambler’s Industries.  In her spare time Mavis enjoyed cooking for her family especially baking cakes and pies, trying out new recipes, gardening, fishing, reading, traveling, singing and participating in church activities. 

Mavis will be missed by all.  She leaves to carry on her legacy of love, two devoted daughters: Justine (Edward) Livingston and  Dorothy (Johnnie) Mitchell both of Orangeburg, SC; four grandchildren: Teresa (Luder) Brown and Dedric Mitchell  both  of Orangeburg, SC; Monique Goodwin and Algeron (Katrena Love) Goodwin both of Charlotte, NC; five great-grandchildren,  one great-great grand, two sisters-in-laws: Bessie Myers of Orangeburg, SC and Merlene Jennings of Rowesville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Services will be held as follows:

The viewing will be held at Glover's Funeral Home on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 2:00pm until 8:00pm.

The funeral service will be held at Edisto Fork United Methodist Church located at 356 Lariot Rd in Orangeburg, SC 29115 on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 1:00pm.
